iW-Rainbow-G3 is based on Freescale's i.MX27 processor and contains Actel's ProASIC3 device, replaceable by an IGLOO flash-based FPGA. The storage interface and controllers can be programmed into the Actel FPGA, which extends the i.MX27 support for additional storage peripherals such as SD/MMC and CE-ATA. The platform supports wireless streaming and media codec, and contains several security features. This flexible and cost-effective design solution is suitable for the rapidly growing consumer market. Product developers need the elemental flexibility to reach their aggressive targets, without compromising on development time, cost, power, and form factor. This generic handheld design is targeted to OEMs, who can adapt the design and bring out innovative and cost-effective products for various applications, such as portable media players, pollution level measurement devices, and industrial PDAs.

The block diagram below gives the details of the iW-Rainbow-G3 board with its components and peripherals. It demonstrates an Actel FPGA working as a CE-ATA controller and enhancing the capability of the Freescale iMX.27 processor, which doesn't support the CE-ATA interface. The board provides several standard features that are part of today’s typical handheld devices, such as the camera interface, LCD, GSM/GPRS interface, and CE-ATA storage device interface.
